I really think this is temporary. The inventory of hotel room might actually lure more tourists, conventions, etc. Some planners look almost 2 years ahead to book rooms for an educational seminar, other events, and so on.

But yes, I have been surprised at all the new hotels. This may translate into quite a market for taxis, or ride sharing, or van pools. And hopefully, the areas and streetscapes BETWEEN the hotels will be improved, like Cherry Way between the Salvation Army building and the interior of Downtown.

Here's a rundown of newly developed hotels (2015-2018) that I found: Hotel Updates 2015-2018 | Pittsburgh PA News & Articles

I'd heard of most of the projects, but some others had missed my attention.

Look for the next article to be about the glut of unoccupied apartments and condos, as predicted in the last year or so by Hoby Hanna and others who were/ are concerned by the proliferation of these developments vs the lack of both population and job growth.

The linked article really focuses on the problems Washington County hotels are having after the fracking boom died down. Maybe the Omni, Ace, etc. hotels are having issues, but it's hard to tell from either the article or the data.

One reasons why the Furys stay in Pittsburgh is because the hotels treat them like royalty, because they NEED the business.

This is a classic bubble. We did not have enough rooms resulting in development of many more hotels. All of them may have made sense at the time but the sum total did not. Rates will be low until the market adjusts. Some of the properties will be re-purposed and some planned projects will be canceled.

How many rooms have come online recently downtown? It seems like there are hotels everywhere now.
