Awww, glad to hear it! I would recommend Spring Hill to the OP too, but there's literally nothing for sale up there right now, at least nothing I think they would like. A lot of our older kid's friends live in the MWS, and we spend a lot of time on the playground along North Ave...basically if the OP is from a big city and always dreamed of living in DC's Georgetown, or Boston's south end, or NYC's Village, I feel the MWS is Pittsburgh's kid-friendly version of that. Definitely not for everyone, but for the people we know there (who are mostly transplants like us), it's a neighborhood dream come true. And the diversity is also a plus -- because you have very different sizes of homes on the same block, you're guaranteed some socio-economic diversity, and of course it's a great area for racial integration too, at least relative to some of the other areas being floated on here. (OP, if you see this and you're poking around on Zillow -- Central North side, Deutschtown, Manchester and Allegheny West are also worth checking out -- this is all the same general area of the Northside, but these other areas tend to have less stuff for sale than the Mexican War Streets proper.)

Thanks for the feedback everyone. We are coming from the Ann Arbor, MI area. We have young children with the oldest entering Kindergarten when we arrive. We will likely only be in Pittsburgh for 3 years, so renting for a year then buying doesn't really make sense for us. Renting might though... we have two dogs so that might limit whats available. Schools and commute to the hospitals are our biggest factors we are looking at.

I've heard the complete opposite from teachers and potential teachers than what is in the article.

The decline in student population will be a serious issue in the near future. Closings and mergers are going to have to happen at some point. There may be a teacher shortage out East but not in Western PA.
