Also, NO I don't need to necessarily live around AA's in a "black" neighborhood. I was raised in suburban NJ in a 95% white neighborhood and never felt uncomfortable and have also lived in Austin, Dallas, DC, and Philadelphia in "black" and "white" area and never felt uncomfortable. SOME diversity would be nice but I'm not sure what you mean by transition to black or white. I don't want to go back to my "black neighborhood" or "white neighborhood"... I want to go back to my SAFE neighborhood where I can raise my child. There's a difference between a place being ALL black or ALL white and just having a very limited amount of diversity. In any case I'm raising a black son and would like to make sure I'm raising him in an area where he will be treated fairly. PERIOD.
Can't help you with the school issue but Coraopolis is a neat little area. One way streets and a lot of different things to walk or drive to. RMU Island sports complex is right down the street along with quick access to 79 and Moon Township. Anytime I've been there it seems pretty diversified but I don't pay as much attention to that as others here do. Then again, those that do pay attention to it obviously don't get out much. Few get outside the city and have almost no idea about the burbs. Check out Big Shot Bob's. Neat little place to eat.

If you really want the most bang for your buck, and don't mind driving a bit, look into going across the line into Beaver County. Taxes are much lower than Allegheny.

Welcome! Hope you decide to take the job and become a new resident in our area!

I'll just echo what others have said for the most part. 65k even with a youngin' will go a long way, and there are places to meet pretty much every living requirement on your budget. Closer to work? I'll agree with eschaton, Sewickley might be worth a look. Or, if you're interested in living in the city and making the jaunt to Coraopolis, I'll echo gg and say give Manchester a look. It is indeed a really cool neighborhood! I wish you much luck and joy in this exciting time of decision making in your life!

That budget seems very doable in Corapolis or Moon Twnshp. Check out craigslist.

Also across the river are: Ben Avon, Ben Avon Heights and they feed into the same schools as Ohio Twp - which has newer plans being built.

As most have said, 65k will be just fine to live comfortably here. you have many options depending on the lifestyle you want. pretty much every area from sewickley to downtown along rt 65 is an option. Moon twp could work as well. tell us a little more about your wants in a neighborhood and we can narrow it down a bit.

These are all excellent choices.

You should also look into the city neighborhoods of Crafton Heights and Chartiers City. A city address will give you more options to services and allow your child to enroll in the cities magnet programs. Diversity will not be an issue and you will be close to Coraopolis. Both Chartiers City and Crafton Heights are suburban in feel. You may be able to rent a nice house with a yard.

While it's known as a pricey place to buy a house, you could find apartments in your price range there it seems, mostly south of 65.
Another good alternative.

Love the recommendations of Crafton Heights and Chartiers City. Her child could go to CAPA, she'd be a reasonable commute away from work in Moon Township, and she'd be close to the Robinson Township shopping mecca---huge Giant Eagle Market District, IKEA, mall, big-box stores, chain restaurants, etc. I think as the East End continues to gentrify the western city neighborhoods (as well as Carnegie, Crafton, and Ingram) will all ratchet up in popularity.

Ok, I'm definitely feeling better about the options. I just haven't had a clue on where to look and have only really heard Dormont and Mount Lebanon so this is definitely giving me some other ideas

As far as my wants in a neighborhood, I'm THINK I'm pretty easy to please now that I have a kid. I like to be close to a grocery store, a good yoga place, a nice daycare, a Target nearby would be nice, parks nearby would be cool, easy access to mall, and maybe easy access to the city on the rare occasion that I get a babysitter and go out.

Dormont and Mt. Lebanon would make your commute to work just that much more of a pain that I'm not sure it would be worth it. For all that you said, I would definitely think Sewickley fits the bill nicely or, on your work's side of the Ohio River, the general Moon Township area. What does everyone else think?
