I think it is a combination of both. If a self driving car can safely navigate this city, it should be ok to anywhere.

The Guinea pigs have been the ones testing the cars already; uber (& their legal department) obviously believe the technology is ready for prime time. Should be immensely more safe then a human operated vehicle.

How are they possibly going to have enough autonomous vehicles to accommodate everyone who wants a free ride in one? I'd gladly utilize one to cut my commute home from work down to 10 minutes in the air conditioning vs. 50 minutes in the searing heat if it was free!

This is really getting a lot of exposure around the country. And it's nice to see that the articles (at least in the more scholarly journals) take it as a given that Pittsburgh was an early center of robot technology going back to the 80s with CMU's first forays into the field. So this is a logical progression.
