Exactly. Some think everyone should see an area the way they see it and it should be the way they want it to be seen.

It was the day that the Allegheny Athletic Association football team defeated the Pittsburgh Athletic Club. The game in itself was not a momentous event. But one of the circumstances of the game did make it a never-to-be-forgotten moment in sports history – one of the AAA players, William (Pudge) Heffelfinger, was openly paid $500 to play the game. Thus pro football made its debut more than 100 years ago in comparatively obscure surroundings that could not possibly have provided the slightest clue to the world-wide popularity the sport would be destined to enjoy, particularly in the waning decades of pro football's first century."

Like it or not, Pittsburgh will always be inextricably linked with football.
Along with football, Pittsburgh has had a big role in professional hockey as well.

The day a Canadian team wins the cup again might become a national holiday in Canada (especially if it's the Leafs lol).

It was home to the first professional hockey league anywhere in the world, the Western Pennsylvania Hockey League, which by 1902 was luring players from Canada, where professionalism was prohibited.

That is just astounding! I had no idea...thanks for posting that link.

Take that, Yonge Street!

The heads in the "centre of the universe" which is Toronto, would explode if that fact became more widely known. It's a shame it didn't translate into future hockey success in Western PA that was lacking here for quite some time though.

Catonsville, Ellicott City, and Columbia Md are also urban area according to census. and lots of other areas like these examples. That is not urban to me.

It gets even worse when you get to younger cities in the midwest like Columbus, Ohio and sunbelt like Charlotte. Some of their "urban areas" are ridiculously non city-like and are just areas of suburban housing with strip malls scattered around.

If you were filming a movie set in Columbus in Pittsburgh, Shadyside could stand in for downtown Columbus.

I don't get the negativity on this thread. Pittsburgh is a big deal now and it always has been since it was discovered. As far as city amenities per square mile, I'd put PGH up against just about any U.S. city, especially Portland, which has seemingly half the stuff in 2.5 times the area. Pittsburgh also has, by a wide margin, the best scenic views of any non-coastal U.S. city. Every inch inside city limits is pretty much an urban area. Where else do you get all that for the price of Pittsburgh?

I know, why can't we be like the UK, France, Germany, and Australia where they care so little about sports their governments have a Minister for Sport.

Exactly.

Pretty amazing how many non sports fans haven't any idea or care to admit the impact that sports have throughout much of the area much less the world.
