I never knew anyone from Long Island, Northern New Jersey, or even Westchester County say they were from NYC either.

Similarly, people who live in northern Virginia don't say they live in DC. People in the South/East Bay don't say they live in San Francisco. On the other hand, people from the suburbs of Boston and Philly often do claim to be from the city.
The suburban areas of NYC and DC are much better known nationally than the suburbs for Pittsburgh, Philly, and Boston. Pittsburgh, Philly, and Boston all also share having an insane amount of small towns/boroughs making up their suburban areas with not much known about them in a geographic sense like NYC or DC.

It always amazes me how few people overseas have ever heard of PA despite its major contributions to American history and it being the 6th most population state.

I grew up in the city but most of my cousins grew up in the eastern suburbs and the Mon Valley. In all cases we are from Pittsburgh while traveling. If you inside the metro your from the municipality that you reside in. How can you go to DC or Miami and say your from Pleasant Hills or Clairton?

I don't know. India and China combined have something like ~50% of our global population, yet I can only name a handful of cities in both countries. Off the top of my head (without consulting a map) I can only list Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Tianjin, Chengdu, Delhi, Calcutta (Kolkata?), Mumbai (Bombay?), Bangalore (Bengalaru?), Chennai, and that's about it.

In similar fashion I'd expect international residents to be able to name New York City, Los Angeles, Washington, and Chicago. From there? I wouldn't be surprised if they never heard of Miami, Atlanta, Houston, Boston, San Francisco, Seattle, Dallas, Denver, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Baltimore, St. Louis, Minneapolis, Phoenix, San Diego, or many other major U.S. cities.

Perhaps, but I feel like people in Europe should have at least heard of PA though all of the history that has happened here and Philly is an important city as well.

There are 3 US cities that's most people in the UK can find on a map (primarily from having visited or wanting to visit): NYC; Orlando; Las Vegas. & generically 'California'.

As an aside, go anywhere in Eastern Europe & say you're from California & you'll immediately make friends as it holds some strange allure.

I'm guessing there are nearly ZERO cities outside the United States that the majority of US Citizens can find on a map. Of course that's quite a bit different than having heard of a place.

California has an allure for many Americans as well. I don't find it very strange though... I blame Beverly Hills 90210 and Baywatch.

Oh, I think many could find London, Paris, Berlin, maybe a few others.

Most of the Europeans I've met have heard of Pennsylvania and Philadelphia (and about half of those have also heard of Pittsburgh). But anecdata is anecdotal...

You crazy if you think even 1 out of 10 people you come across could pass this test.

Where is Berlin? Seriously, without looking most of you don't know this.
