I am going to be relocating to the Pittsburgh area. I am looking for a safe neighborhood with good school. Since I do not drive, I need a walkable neighborhood with shopping and public transportation easily accessible. I will be traveling to the city so I would like a reasonable commute. Any information would be appreciated. Thank you.

Mt. Lebanon's downtown is connected to downtown Pittsburgh by light rail. The area around Washington road has shops and things.

I would also re-consider city neighborhoods unless you have some really specific reasons to avoid them

what is your budget? Buying/renting?

Off the top of my head I am thinking Squirrel Hill or Shadyside...but both are kinda pricey (depending on where you are coming from)...cheaper is Bloomfield. All have grocery stores in walking distance. Not all neighborhoods do (Regent Sq being one of them).

alrighty then, I would imagine that kinda shoots SqHill, Shadyside and Mt. Lebanon out of the water. Unless you are looking for a real fixer-upper.

Bellevue? 15202 -There is a Kuhn's on the main drag there. Schools are okay (although I will admit lack of knowledge on this one, as I don't have kids)

Crafton/Ingram- 15205 - my neighborhood. We have a shopping center w/most amenities, but the rest is metro-suburban. A busway gets you downtown fairly quickly.

Maybe Millvale or Sharpsburg? They are fairly dense, cheap and on the other side of the Allegheny from Lawrenceville. They are safe, quieter communities as well.

Considering your price range, Dormont might be a good fit. Its only about 5 miles south of Downtown Pittsburgh, and a good mix of residential and 'main street' retail and businesses. The borough's very walkable and the 'T,' Pittsburgh's light-rail transit runs right through town.

You could try West View (15229) located just north of the City of Pittsburgh. There is a large shopping center on the site of the former West View Park on Perry Hwy (Rt. 19), which includes a Giant Eagle, K-Mart, and the usual strip mall video stores, banks, etc. Several bus lines make stops at the center. There are also smaller shops along Perry Hwy between the West View Park shopping center and West View Elementary School, including a huge new drugstore. West View is part of the North Hills School District, which is pretty good, and you can definitely buy a house in your price range there.

Beechview is just north of Dormont (but is within the city of Pittsburgh,) and also on the T line with a grocery store and a small business district. Maybe look into Brookline and Overbrook, as well.

You could look at Beaver, in Beaver County. It has a nice little downtown. May be a bit over your price range, though.
