On a few occasions last week, I used the T in the free fare zone between the north shore and downtown. At no time do you make any transaction, or go through a turnstile - you just walk into the station and board the next train, and then walk straight out at your desired destination station.

Does PAT even count the free zone riders in their ridership numbers, and if so how do they count them?

I've often wondered the same thing. I feel like they don't count those riders which drastically undercuts the total ridership.

I agree, I would say roughly half of the people riding that I noticed, got on and off before first avenue- meaning they didn't pay anything, and it seems like they must not be counted at all.

I love that thing, and appreciate that I can get a free ride from Steel Plaza to Allegheny Station. If I were counted, that would be several rides a month between station A to one at least two stops away.

Multiply that by people in the service industry and students (daily use for each), and the MANY people that seem to be visitors, going from Steel Plaza (nearby to several hotels ) to either of the northern stations.

Our stations are rather pleasant places, too, and clean. (Subtext: people here take this for granted.)

Steel Plaza is clean, but feels extremely dated from the 80s.
And Wood St is rather unpleasant

Since advertisers pay for the free zone to the NS, I would think they would need some type of a count.
