First and foremost it's PittsburgH, with an H.

What's your budget?

And you do know that living downtown, without a car, may be difficult. And expensive. There is no grocery store. You may be better off living in a surrounding neighborhood and commuting (via a bus/subway etc) into your job every day.

Well, if they live downtown, there ARE the buses and the lightrail system (The "T") which could shuttle them to the store..... IJS....

But then they'd have to haul groceries back on the bus/T with them.

You can live Downtown near The Strip and walk to places to get groceries. For that matter, you could live in The Strip and walk to work.

But I agree another good option would be to live in one of the many walkable neighborhoods with good public transit links to Downtown. There are lots of options, so a budget and preferences would be helpful.

I'd suggest living in a neighborhood where you can walk or take transit to the grocery store and work.

Shadyside
Squirral Hill
East Liberty
Bloomfield
Friendship
Southside (in the flats near 20th St.)
Allegheny East

I'd add Mt. Washington/Duquesne Heights to that list, too.

The Pennsylvanian is on Liberty right next to Grant, and that has some nice apartments.
I believe there is a Grant Street subway station which will take you to Wood St. and Gateway Center downtown, Station Square, and the South Hills.

The Pennsylvanian is near the Amtrak station and the Greyhound station (or it will be when it's finished) but the T isn't really close by--it's not far, but it's not right there. The walk to the Wood St. station is about as far as from the Steel Plaza station, about a half mile from the Pennsylvanian.

You can catch a bus in Friendship that takes you right downtown on Liberty. From here you can walk to groc, dry cleaning, restaurants and catch other buses easily as well.

I just saw the Cork Factory apartments in the Strip District this past weekend. They're nice but pricey.
