Hi Jen,

I think the magnet document is pretty exhaustive, if long, so the cheat sheet is basically this:

- There are "preferences", which get students bumped to the top of a magnet list. Preferences tend to deal with whether a student already has a sibling there or whether they would be continuing a program that the student is already enrolled in.

- Everyone who doesn't have a preference is entered into a lottery, and people can earn "weights" which increase their probability of being selected in the lottery. These tend to be geography (people who live near the magnet get preference), having parents who can't provide for them, attendance history, etc.

Highland Park is one of the most beautiful neighborhoods in the city, and the park itself is also lovely. There are some gorgeous turn of the century mansions in this neighborhood, the kind that make your jaw drop. Personally, I always preferred this neighborhood to the popular choice of Shadyside. There are less of those 1960s big box apartment buildings in Highland Park.

I totally agree. Another of the benefits of Highland Park is the parking situation - every time I visit a friend in Shadyside I have a terrible time finding parking - especially on a weekend evening. Street parking in Highland Park is readily available. Plus having the park right there, and Tazza D'Oro's....

Hello, I know I am a little late. But I was thinking about getting an apartment at 5800 Stanton Ave. in Highland Park..it is near the intersection of Euclid ave and Stanton Ave. Is this a nice part of Highland Park? And what is the roughest area close by...I get mixed reviews about east liberty..
