Just one example.
I grew up in Toledo and have lived in Pittsburgh for 12 years. The only things that struck me were the topography, the Jewish population, public transportation not being just for poor people, and the density of buildings/businesses.

Everything else was a pretty seamless transition. I can't say the same for trips to NYC, Philly, or DC. The differences in how people acted there are much more palpable.

Eye of the beholder, I guess. The flatness of the Cleveland area struck me. Heck, Omaha is hillier, and has a nice river (the Missouri). I asked my DH, who has no dog in this fight, if he thought Pgh and Cleveland were similar and he said "no".

Default Minneapolis Native..Minniesoda

Minneapolis native. Lived in Milwaukee. Lived in Cleveland.
Pittsburgh is not the Midwest. It is Northeast and it has it's very own unique feel. I think it is the Rivers. Pittsburgh, for boat ownership in Number 2 in the USA. Florida is number 1. That is really different. People here are more well rounded. Good sense of humor and it is one of the few places that the people get Irony..so that is my Hayseed Midwest take on Pittsbugh.

during your "visit" you made this observation. because like most people, you traveled to mingle with the intelligentsia, and not for, well, fun and frivolty, not that there is anything wrong with that.

Wow the natives Pittsburgers must have just LOVED you...

And btw good luck finding your urban sophisticates in other northeastern cities. I hear Baltimore and Philadelphia (especially South Philly) are just filled with them.

edit: and don't forget to check out the sophisticated borough of Staten Island when you visit NYC

Oh sure, there was nothing but Ivy League scholars at PNC Park!

We got along just fine, thank you. Especially those who weren't rude enough to fancy themselves as being above this "hayseed" from the Midwest.
