Don't be so sensitive. The guy that called Midwesterners "hayseeds" is our resident curmudgeon and a hillbilly himself.

He lives in a very wealthy area, but he is definitely a hillbilly. Not at all "sophisticated"...

You're right - the possibilities for northeastern sophistication are nearly boundless. I also forgot on his way to Staten Island he could've also visited the crowned jewel of northeastern sophisticates in the metropolis of Newark NJ!

I can't even guess what gave you the idea I think any such thing.
You obviously ran into disgruntled Bucs fans. That's to be expected.

OMG! I just realized I hit the wrong button when I voted. Is there any way to void my vote so I can vote again? Yac?

You've lost the internet.
Cheers!

Baseball is the last thing on the list of things I'd do for fun.

Thanks for the reminder. How bitter I am we will never be as good or sophisticated as those areas

A lot of bitter people there. Best ballpark in baseball though.

From the replies on this thread, it seems like there are basically two kinds of people who think Pittsburgh is in the Midwest.

1. People who have never been to, or haven't spent much time, in Pittsburgh.

2. People who have never been to, or haven't spent much time, on the east coast.

One thing that really strikes me is how many people want to define regions by topography (ie, Midwest = flat lands) or else culture (which leads to a never-ending fight about what constitutes culture).

I think the real reason I see a kind of Rust Belt continuity from Baltimore through Pittsburgh and Cleveland (and might also add a few smaller cities to the mix, like Toledo) is that I am mostly interested in architecture, and the trajectory of these cities as having built a lot of rather glamorous structures in the general period 1880-1940 before experiencing a steep postwar decline. But that tells you a lot about me, and how I think, and what I do for a living; I can see where people who define the question differently aren't ever going to put Cleveland and Baltimore in the same box, or Pittsburgh for that matter.
