They can be turned into a residence. There is one down the street from me that is someone's house. I also knew someone ,when I was in college, whose family lived in an old church.

Since the one in your link is so big it could be turned into apartments.

I remember several years ago now, they were supposed to turn the Holy Family Church in Lawrenceville into a concert hall for a Wind Symphony group and the grade school next to it into apartments. A quick Google search though shows that the church and school were put up for sale again back in December. quite ridiculous that such a prominent and large space in the neighborhood remains empty....

Another possibility is a brew house.

There's a guy here in McKeesport who bought an old church across from the library and is renovating it as his residence. He is restoring all of the original stained glass. I think he only paid $30k for the building and it's stunning.

Back in Boston a friend had a spectacular apartment in an old church that had been renovated and turned into six large units. I have often wondered if we might ever see something like that in Pittsburgh.

Point taken about the heating bills for the church, but all you need is to divide the building in a thoughtful way and maybe pick some spaces that you don't use in the winter. We do that with our house anyway, since it's more space than we need and the heating is set up in three different zones.

You know, the Internet really is an amazing tool. Pres Pioneer mentions a church across from the library, and here I am, someone who is not in Pittsburgh, who has never been there, and I'm able to post a link that has 95% chance of correctly identifying the building PP commented on.
