How does Pittsburgh have an "unmatched portfolio of technology talent"?
"forget it, he's rolling."

If anything puts Pittsburgh over the top, it'll be CMU. CMU has the best computer science program. Plus Amazon has an interest in robotics in its Fulfillment Centers, so who better than CMU to work with?

Yes, I agree. Pitt and Duquesne add to a generally large university presence, but CMU really is special on the technology front.

I still don't especially think we'll get this, and I am somewhat ambivalent, but it's true that it's hard to find a better university town that isn't wildly expensive. It's not like MIT or CalTech are in cities where you can find a nice house for $120k.

I think Pittsburgh will be in the top 5, and checks off a lot of boxes- but I think the climate and lack of a good public transit system will get them. Then again, the only viable sunbelt locations might be Atlanta or Dallas, and Dallas isn't in the East.

In my dream world, Amazon would come here and give all their employees bus passes the same way Pitt and CMU do, and that injection of cash would help save the PAT from draconian cuts. Not holding my breath, but still. It's true that a light rail or subway won't happen, but we are a small city with a very effective network of bus routes that actually make it quite possible to commute without a car -- but the catch is that we're in danger of losing this amenity, or seeing it cut back considerably anyway.

Potential sites for a HQ2 facility are emerging:

Almono may be at the top of the list but it is by no means the only site under consideration by Pittsburgh and Allegheny County officials in their quest to land Amazon’s second headquarters.

Another potential site emerged Monday — 15 acres of riverfront industrial property on the North Side near Rivers Casino targeted for redevelopment by Millcraft Investments.

Others that could be in play for at least part of the massive development are the 28-acre former Civic Arena site in the lower Hill District and the 195-acre World Trade Center site at Pittsburgh International Airport, as well as others in places as diverse as Lawrenceville and Cranberry.

I'm shocked Buncher isn't trying to throw their holdings into the mix. Between their segments of the Strip District and the parking crater directly across the Allegheny River from there in what used to be Schweitzer Loch, there would be room for a decent-sized campus.
