Hey -- I know for a fact I can't live in a rural farm type setting.... I find places like that creepy. Very "Hills Have Eyes"...

Great minds think alike, but we've thought alike for years now haven't we? Crazy thing is, I don't mind rural living, but I'd just like things to be "bunched up" closer so I don't have to drive all over the place for the things I need.

The hills have eyes, EEK! (Yeah, thanks for the visual....I SAW that movie!)
I feel SO much better now that I'm going to PA in like - oh, say -- THREE DAYS!
(If you don't hear from me for a couple of days, I've either been banned ........ killed...... J/K)

And after trying the Urban Pioneer thing -- frankly -- I still can't wait till I'm back in the 'burbs.
I'll say it here right now and all the urban people can send this directly to the mods - I LOVE THE SUBURBS!
Well, the suburbs in Scottsdale, Coral Gables and Williamsville (The ones I like best)

((((hugs Tallysmom)))))))

I agree with you, there is no Nirvana. Colorado, 49th (or 48, 47 whatever depending on the source) in funding for public college education, etc. I also agree that it is not necessary to stay somewhere and make it better somewhere if it isn't your cup of tea. And I will add, so what if people make some observations about Pittsburgh that are less than positive? That is done on the other boards, too. Many state formums have threads such as "Best worst town in (insert name of state here)", and the like.

As for my commentary about sports, when my nephew moved to Pittsburgh he said he thought Denver was bad about football until he moved to Pittsburgh. There is a much higher degree of football madness in the Burgh, which makes it harder for people who aren't into it. My family is consumed with gymnastics right now. Who is going to the Olympics? Most everyone else doesn't care.
Don't even get me started on the Arizona schools.....We are dead last in the nation. Oh wait, I think Louisiana is behind us..... It's been a real struggle to make sure my kids got a decent education here. Parents have to be very "hands-on" to make sure their kids get a good education here. Even in the affluent areas, you have to be very aware. In fact, Arizona high schools will graduate the kids yet they won't even have enough credits to go to college! As a parent, you had better know what they need for out of state universities because the schools won't automatically prepare your child. I could go on, but since my daughter is graduated, I'm trying to let go of the craziness that surrounds the school systems here. LOL

Hey Kat! I've coached gymnastics for years! I competed internationally in trampoline and tumbling. My niece Brittany is an elite gymnast. One of my sisters still coaches elite gymnastics. She's even in the Athletic Hall of Fame at the Kessler Center at Canisius College in Buffalo because she was such a fantastic gymnast! Gymnastics is a topic of daily conversation in our household. Sweet.

My daughters did gymnastics through high school. One was ranked 26th in the state high school association (though CO is not a large state, lol). One of the students both of them competed against is a gymnast for the University of Denver, so we try to get to at least one of their meets per year. Cool.

Default taxes

every time the city needs money it comes out of the taxpayers pocket for things like new stadiums and port authority.

The main thing I don't like is the cold weather from mid-October to mid-April. Also, we can easily go weeks without seeing the sun in the winter due to how cloudy it is that time of the year. Also, local politicians we have are extremely corrupt and the people are, in many places, not smart enough to elect new ones (a lot of people here unfortunately prefer continuity over positive change). Also, to the people in the beginning of this thread who do not like the slow driving of the people here, I strongly disagree with you. First of all, most of the people here do not drive that slow in my opinion. Secondly, I used to drive fast but then by slowing down and actually driving the speed limit (or even less in some cases), I found that I could save $40/month in gas with gas at $4/gallon. It is also safer and only adds a small amount of time to my trips. It is amusing to see cars racing to stop lights and slamming on their brakes while I drift to the light and catch up to them when it turns green .

Many of the older folks have lived on the same street their whole lives.
You've apparently never been to Miami...
Are the Haitians up there too?!

What Iam starting to dislike is the overdose on sports here..This might be true in other cities also but I think they have other things going on to balance things out..

Also the way things move so slow here...the casino starts and stops building for example.

Ok people are hollering about the drink tax..other cities have had a drink tax for years..
what alot of people consider new and innovative in Pittsburgh is old in many other cities

like the new "Market on Forbes"..NYC and Chicago have had that concept for years..

1. The weather sucks. End of discussion.
2. Natives are rude, ugly, uneducated, unsophisticated, etc...
3. The public transit is a mess. Unions threatening to go on strike. Fares too high. Buses don't run frequently enough.
4. Lack of nightlife. 2AM the city shuts down (on weekends.) 10PM on weekdays. Buses stop running from 12AM-2AM so don't think about getting anywhere after. Also inconvenient wait times. Partying on the South Side? Live in Shadyside? Want to get home at 1:30AM on a friday night? forget it.
5. No future. The city is going backwards, not forward
6. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
7. Luke Ravenstall
8. The Pittsburgh Steelers
9. Pittsburgh Regional Airport
10. It's proximity to West Virginia

I think PA should allow both its largest cities to have a 4 am close, or at least 3 am. Philadelphia needs it to compete with NYC (4 am) and DC (3:15 am)...although Baltimore seems to shut down at 1:45 am. Pittsburgh coudl use it to become a nightlife hub, hell, even Buffalo has a 4 am close. so does Chicago. extra drink tax revenue should go towards getting people home form the bars.

Baltimore shuts down early because of the pervasive and widespread crime.
Some business owners board up after 6 pm!
