Wow, you guys are having A LOT of rain for the next 10 days (at least). But that's not a deal breaker.

I looked at apartments for rent in Oakland. Not bad at all.

Thanks again.

Yes, but be careful with Oakland -- some rentals are basically student slums, others are quite nice. Check the Royal York -- that buidling has a lot of local university professors living in it, and it's a good example of the sort of building that I would recommend to someone who doesn't plan on attending many fraternity parties

No part of Oakland is in the 15217 zip code.

The rain keeps everything green and lush. And we don't have wild fires or dust storms. Plus September and October were dry and warm, so we need it.

Right, but the OP was interested in 15217 mainly for the transportation from the JCC -- Oakland is extremely well connected to so many great bus lines, and the OP is over 65 and can ride the PAT bus for free -- so that opens things up a lot. And of course from Oakland there's tons of bus lines to Squirrel Hill.

New Mexico doesn't have a lot of fires at all. (California sure does -- I got tired of the earthquakes and the fires, and I left.) We don't have dust storms either -- Arizona does. If New Mexico wasn't so poor (medical services here are not good at all) and if the crime rate weren't so high -- it would be ideal. It's gorgeous, and we have a mild change of seasons -- just to keep things interesting.

Yes, RogersPark said that before -- but thanks.

I did check out The Royal York -- it got some pretty bad reviews recently.

I'm going to come out there and take a look around. Wherever I am at 70 (14 months from now), I'm there for good. I'm too old to make another major move.

Thanks for all the info, everybody. I appreciate it. You're good people.

I am in SQ Hill south and about a mile from the JCC. There are often paces available to rent right on Murray Ave and in the 15217 zip code but very nearly into Greenfield(literally 3 houses from the line). This little section of Murray is pretty level and there are also apartments up the hill that offer fairly easy walking to get to Murray ave and the little business district. It is possible to find places to live that won't require you to hike up and down steep hills to get to your bus stops or to some shops.

When I moved here I had never lived in a city in my adult life and was not sure what to expect and I really like the area. There is plenty of bus service along the Murray ave corridor to get you around the area.

I think my favorite thing is being in very close proximity to Phipps conservatory. Our botanical garden is wonderful and when it is cold and icy outside a trip there can really help the winter blues. Sadly no bus goes to Phipps and is is a hike from the closest bus stop.

Anyway don't rule it out as a potential place to live. You just have to look around for places that will suit your needs.
