I have lived in both areas which is why I get so frustrated with Pittsburgh residents. The attitude of Eastern state residents towards public transit is the exact opposite.

I love Philly. I would move there if I could work at the downtown office location of my company versus the farther out airport location. I usually head to Philly a few times a year, sometimes staying in the suburb of Willow Grove, but always heading into the city for a day/evening downtown. We usually spend time near Rittenhouse Square or Northern Liberties and Fishtown. The only thing I hate about going to Philly is the drive on the turnpike.

Yeah. If I had the choice (e.g., if job wasn't here, and my wife's parents weren't here) I would move to Philly in a heartbeat. Not sure where I'd live exactly - wherever I could find a reasonably affordable family-sized rowhouse in a walkable neighborhood.

Yea it would be amazing if the Amtrak service between the 2 cities was faster. I know once you get further west, the mountains slow down the speed. Why it takes so long. If we could get a high speed rail connection between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, that would be a game changer OR if we could get really cheap flights connecting the two cities. I believe flights now are in the $225 range.

I would want to live in places I cant afford (aka Chestnut Hill) or places that would be a horrible commute to work via public transportation. I also cannot give up my housing I have here, as I will never (even in Pittsburgh) get a house as nice as I have now for what I paid for it.

I think I would like to move to Philly for a while just to enjoy the restaurants and the hustle of a larger city for while. As much as I love it here, at some point I am going to give in and try something different.

A game changer would be to expand passenger service in Pittsburgh.

This is true! It would be amazing if we could invest in some new lines.

Yea cost of housing in Pittsburgh is pretty amazing TBH. Its amazing what you can buy for your money, for a metro of Pittsburgh size. One of the many attributes that make quality of life in Pittsburgh very high. Real Estate is definitely booming in SEPA and really starting to get high. Although still way more affordable than NYC/DC/BOS.

Next time your in SEPA. Check out Media, PA if you are here multiple days and want something different! Tons of restaurants and a good brewery. Its a rockin spot!

it is interesting how the suburbs in philly are praised while the pittsburgh suburbs are demonized. from the looks of it, philedelphia is even more sprawling. what am i missing here?

Philadelphia suburbs are full of historic walkable towns for the most part, SEPTA also has a massive commuter rail network, that is very old, so many of the suburbs are built around the rail network, and therefore they do not feel 'sprawling'. Think of Sewickley. And that is the Philadelphia suburbs times 20.

There are some car oriented suburbs within the SEPA region, but they are not the dominant type. The suburbs are larger than Pittsburgh's but I would not say they are 'sprawling' because most are transit oriented and have tons of character.

With that I find Pittsburgh's suburbs to also be lovely. The topography adds so much character.
