Isn't living in Washington county just for lower taxes negated by the cost of gasoline, wear and tear on the car and loss of time commuting to and from Oakland? Seems that any tax savings would be more than eaten up by transportation costs.

I think it has to do with hose people not wanting to live in the city, if I worked in Oakland every day I would not move closer. The extra commute time is worth it to me for the lifestyle we live. Lower taxes probably didn't figure in there decision.

Based on my experience it was. My coimmute was costing me $400 a month between gas and parking. Which is why in my moving thread I am determined to stay as close to Oakland as possible ,given my situation.

Some would rather pay those costs than higher taxes.

the person that buys a house in peters would need to spend double to get a similar house in the city for the same lifestyle (schools, space, etc). the comparison is more like usc vs peters, where the commute is negligible.

Do that many people who live in Peters really work in Oakland, or the city in general? I mean, I presume there are some, but I always thought that more of the people there had jobs somewhere in the suburban south hills. Unlike Cranberry it's not really a quick and easy drive on the highway into town.

I agree with Paul2421, most of the people that are moving to Peters are picking Peters over another suburb. Another reason, people pick the further out burbs is that they want new construction at an "affordable" price. Not many new homes are being built in the closer in burbs and if they are they are usually fairly pricey.

I know several who live in Peters and work downtown. In fact, everyone I know that lives in Peters (which isn't many as a percentage of the total population there) work downtown. I have no concrete evidence that this is normal, though.

Most people I know from usc and Peter's work downtown, I do know a few doctors that work in Oakland but I believe most of there time is not spent in a hospital but in a suburban office.
