How much money do they have to pay? They don’t even want to pay Stallings.

Giving out free playing time won’t make them sign. Quality/top recruits can get that elsewhere.

Pitt has a good example across town. Duquesne has had 10 basketball coaches since Red Manning stepped down in 1974. Not counting the current coach, that is an average tenure of under five years. Since 1974 there have been two coaches with overall winning records, (Rice from 1978–1982, and Everhart from 2006–2012). Over that time there has been one NCAA appearance (1977), four NIT appearances (1980, 1981, 1994. and 2009), and two conference championships (1980 and 1981).

Duquesne appears to have made an excellent choice with Keith Dambrot, who started 14-6, this past season but finished 16-16. They were lucky to hire him away from the University of Akron where he was 305-139 (.687) in 13 years after having been out of college basketball for eight seasons. He had three NCAA appearances at Akron. Dambrot's last two teams at Akron were 26-9 and 27-9. He was not a coach on the verge of being fired. He was 58 when he was hired.

Dambrot is the type of coach that Pitt needs to find, not one who is using Pitt as a stepping stone. He is not the type of coach that Pitt will try to recruit. They will go after younger coaches with a winning record at higher level D-I programs. These coaches will either have baggage and/or want to use Pitt as an interim step to where they really want to coach.

I think the best to be hoped for is that if they do hire a younger coach with a winning record at a higher D-1 program is that he can hopefully at least build the program up enough before he leaves to where it’s on the right track and the job/program looks more appealing.

The biggest problem is that if they don’t get this hire right, it’s going to be a very long time until the program gets back to winning.

They will be a hurry to make this hire. Heather Lyke has been looking at potential coaches since at least January and has likely hired a search firm. Hopefully history doesn't repeat itself as with the Stallings search.

If I'm a a younger coach with a winning record at a higher D-1 program, why would I take a chance with Pitt with the possibility of another winless season in the ACC and the end of my coaching career? I doubt if Keith Dambrot was much younger if he would have taken the Duquesne job.

Agreed.

It’s going to be extremely interesting to see what happens.

I’d give Pitino a look also...but I don’t think Pitino would ever consider coming here.

Thad Matta turned the University of Georgia and $15 million down. So if Pitt wants him, it could be very pricey, Georgia's offer breaks down to $3 million a year.

Pretty sure I heard he turned it down due to health reasons. Back problem is what I think was said on the radio.
