Wouldn't regent square go to one of the two worst schools in the state?

Depends upon which part of Regent Square you're talking about.

I was always thought the city was more resident owned properties and wilkinsburg had a lot of the rentals so I just assumed getting a place in the city would be difficult.

Yes, I think that's accurate.

We have no indication whether or not the OP and their spouse have kids, and they certainly aren't looking to buy immediately, so I think - initially - that looking for commute convenience without regard to school district would be the best.

I was thinking, if inside PPS, then OP could get into one of the magnet schools

No, I asked, no response. Was just offering my suggestion in case that was an issue.

Quite honestly, the commute from the city to monroeville is a breeze. there is virtually zero traffic in the AM, but the commute into the city from the east can be brutal. Definitely put more consideration into the commute to downtown when looking. I would personally not venture further east than regent square.

what type of neighborhood do you like? more suburban, dense urban? walkable to businesses? parks? etc.
I would prefer more of a suburban area if at all possible. We do have two dogs so if there are areas around that we could take them on a walk for/take to a park that would be great as well. I'm alright with any type of area as long as it is safe.

There is a free park and ride at Monroeville Mall near the lower level of Macy's. Here is the schedule: http://www.portauthority.org/rt/p67.pdf

Also if you'd rather live near Plum / Holiday Park area there is a bus from there, the P12 : http://www.portauthority.org/rt/p12.pdf

If he works off hours Wilkinsburg isn't too far away to drive and there is a large park and ride on the East Busway. The P1 has frequent service all day: http://www.portauthority.org/rt/p1.pdf

The fare is $2.75 cash / $2.50 using the ConnectCard
Thank you for the info! If we did look at a place near Monroeville, do you know how long the bus ride would be from there into the city? He will have regular business hours during the week.

We do not have any children right now, but hopefully within the next few years after we get settled in. The areas you mentioned, do they have safe school districts?

We do not have any kids right now. We would like to rent to start out with to figure out where we will be in the next few kids and once we're settled have children.
