One of my objections to blaming the parents is that even if you establish that one or both parents is not a good role model and doesn't push their kids or value education, so what? You see this in letters to the Tribune all the time, "Where are the parents?" And my question is, what is your next move? You've found someone to blame, now what? Brush off your hands because your work here is done? Too bad about the kid though, better luck next life I guess.

I think you've hit mark on the harsh reality of it. I'm not insinuating that schools should brush off their hands and not do the best that they can for every student they have -- of course they should. I'm saying that education starts at home at a very young age. We teach our children to walk, talk, play, etc. There's no reason why that should stop once they are of age to go off to Kindergarten. That would be like the parents brushing their hands and saying their work is done. Success and failure has to be shared, but clearly one party (the parents) have more at stake and have more influence both discipline-wise and time-wise.
And I hope this doesn't come across as racist, because that is not the intent at all, but while you hear people make jokes about Asians being smarter and good in math, science, and technology, the reality of it is go take a walk around CMU and look at who you see. I'm sure the enrollment data is readily available online. It's not because Asians are "smarter" than black or white Americans -- it's a result of their culture. Being good at math, for example, is much more highly valued in certain cultures. Children are expected to put a lot of effort into their studies both in and out of school (hours and hours a night). An inner-city teacher in the United States, for example cannot change the culture of the students enrolled in the school. Culture is taught from an early age and teacher can only do the best with what they're given. In the best case scenario, their best might be enough to overcome a parental role model who does not value education.

Tiger parenting is quite a sacrifice to make teaching math and science easier for teachers.
The verdict on tiger-parenting? Studies point to poor mental health

There's a large majority of white students at CMU and Pitt in those factbook stats.
That blows Mtl-Cns' theory.

Wrong. You have to take in consideration the percentage of population of each race. Clearly there are way more Asians as a percentage than any other race at CMU.
I fully agree that education starts at home and it is home life that is key to success for the most part. Not saying some kid might somehow rise above the household and leave it all behind, but it is pretty rare.

First off, I'm not at all talking about tiger parenting. Not even close. Never even heard of it until I read your link. I'm talking about checking in with your kids, making sure that they're keeping up with their assignments, letting them know that you value the work that they do in school, show interest in the work that they do in school, let them know how education has benefited you, talk about their future plans, reward them for doing well, show respect for their teachers and administrators at their school so that they will, maybe give them a workbook or something over a long holiday to practice math or Spanish instead of playing video games all day. Maybe you grew up in a family like this but not everyone did.
And as far as my theory being blown, the proper statistic to look at would not be the raw number of students or percent of students by demographic in a school like CMU, rather, it would be how does that proportion compare to a "lesser" university (whatever the criteria would be for that). You could spend all day comparing metrics but you'd have to agree on a methodology for evaluating both demographics and quality of schools.

When you set your pay rates too low, you end up scraping the bottom of the barrel in terms of the quality of people you end up hiring. Be they teachers, police officers, or whatever. But as taxpayers we have every right to demand accountability, which frankly we rarely get under current circumstances.
So, you want most of the teachers to take a pay cut?

At $70K, that would be an $11K pay cut in the FC district, so you are speaking the truth in my district.
As I have stated countless times, it isn't that I have a problem with teachers making good pay, but my biggest concern is long term budgeting. As teachers retire making that $90K and sometimes over $100K a year, they will keep getting pay based on that salary. The end result isn't a good one because the overhead will be too high in the district which will create cuts in education down the road. All this is great for current students and teachers, but not so good for the next generation. It is what it is and what is done is done. No going back now. Cuts are coming and education will take a hit, unless we keep raising taxes each year. How much higher can they go?

There's a larger percentage of white students at CMU than Asians. If you mean the percentage of the Asian student population compared to the US demographics, that's irrelevant since a significant percentage of CMU students are international/foreign. There's over a billion Asians in China alone. The world's population is 57% Asian.
