Has anyone ever acquired a self uniting marriage license? My fiancée and I were trying to decide who to officiate our wedding when we learned about Pennsylvania's self uniting marriage licensing. Now we're considering forgoing an officiant and instead announcing our marriage ourselves in front of our guests.

I think that NorCider mentioned that they were married using a Quaker (self-uniting) license. I think that all you need to do is to go to any county building with your fiancee, get a self-uniting license and get married in the presence of two witnesses who sign the license. Afterwards, you just file the paperwork to make it official. I'm guessing that NorCider will chime in on your post to clarify any details of obtaining and using a Quaker marriage license.

Everything is the same as the process for a ‘regular’ license, you just have to specify you want the self uniting paperwork when you go get the license.

One other note, license prices vary by county but are all valid for the entire state so you can save a couple of bucks if you find yourself near a courthouse in another county when getting the license.

One other question we have is that my fiancée was told by a friend that self uniting marriages aren't recognized outside of Pennsylvania. Is there any truth to that?

It would be awesome to hear from NorCider.

It’s recorded & recognized exactly the same as any other marriage license

I was suspecting that. My assumption was that the two licenses are different paths to the same certificate and once the the certificate is issued it would look the same as any other, but wasn't certain if that was correct.

I know some couples who did the Quaker route. Be sure and check with a lawyer to make sure that it carries the same weight as a regular license when it comes to death/inheritance issues.

My wife and I did this. Just show up at the City County building with your fiancee, sign the document with witnesses whenever you want (we did it at the party, which was our "wedding") and then make sure to mail it in.

Yep, we did it when it was known as a Quaker license. We went to the City County building with two witnesses. The paperwork and process took about an hour IIRC, this was 2003. I can't comment on whether or not it's recognized outside of PA, we have roots here and I do not see us leaving Pittsburgh at this point in time. Somewhere along the way I remember hearing the Quaker license was either unavailable or harder to get because it was a loophole for same sex couples.

I thought we needed the witnesses at the time of the paperwork but I could be mistaken. We definitely took them with us and to dinner on us afterwards.
