If you're consulting, I assume you'll be flying out a lot. Thus, I'd recommend the South Hills over the North Hills. Look for areas around Settlers Cabin Park. Not a bad commute to the airport, to downtown, to big box stores, but still close to rural areas and nature.

I hear chalfant is great, and you can buy half the 'borough' for 350k. 75% of it if they list it as east mckeesport!

For clarity, Settlers Cabin area is west not south. Be advised traffic can be miserable out there, esp in all of the shopping areas. My brother lives out in that part of town and he has to hit Lowes by 9 am on weekends in order to not sit in all of the back ups.

If the OP is looking for something kind of similar to Rockville, being that it is mostly not new housing, but older , more established areas in 'leafy' neighborhoods, I'd suggest looking in Allison Park and Hampton Twp.

I'll second this. When you have an early morning flight, you will wish you were closer to the airport. I knew people who lived in Murrysville and Monroeville who would get a hotel room the night before an early morning flight. Flying has only gotten worse since then.

I would disagree on south hills being a good choice. the areas of the north hills I mentioned are very easy to get to the airport. anything near 65 gets you there in about 20 min or so. cross the sewickley bridge and you are essentially there.

I don't really consider settlers cabin area to be "south hills" though. I would put it in west hills territory which would also be a good fit. I would just hate dealing with the parkway in or out on a daily basis.

Thanks to those that had useful responses, any areas that have newer colonial style homes?

Does Mt. Lebanon and presto area fit my needs?

I will be moving to Pittsburgh for work as a consultant and will be moving from Rockville, Md (Montgomery County). I have a budget of $350k for a single family home and was wondering which areas are 20-40 minutes from downtown that are suburbs or rural areas? I like being by the farm land or trees for privacy but I also like being 15 minutes away from a home depot or other big box store like target.

Any areas that are safe and white neighborhoods that you would recommend?

Thank you.

Robinson Township might be given a look.

No, you could not afford a newer home in mt lebo and your budget is too small for presto for what you want. Look into south fayette or collier twp. Collier twp will have lower property taxes.
