The girl was walking along the tracks wearing ear buds and did not realize a train was coming. When she crossed the tracks, she was hit. She has been pilloried on social media for her carelessness and says that people should have more empathy.

I’d have more empathy for the person operating the train that could’ve possibly had to deal with killing her rather than someone not paying attention to a train track while wearing earbuds.

does she mean SYMPATHY instead of empathy? i think so. or else, she is suggesting we identify with the action of wearing earbuds and walking on train tracks.

sorry to pile on, but i agree with erie - the conductor having to see a young person's body destroyed by a moving behemoth is definitely worthy of empathy. i am sympathetic for her physical pain and body damage, though.

she's probably just a good kid that was careless. through history probably hundreds of kids were killed by moving vehicles, horses, or cattle.

That’s sad, and there’s nothing we can do to make people understand that they need to be aware and put down the phone.

And unfortunately there is also nothing we can do to stop people from being jerks behind a keyboard. I firmly believe people who do that sort of thing have no real control in their own lives, and need to act out online to feel like they have some control somewhere.

It is sad and unfortunate, however, expecting empathy is ridiculous. Pay attention and learn your lesson from it so it doesn’t happen again.

I agree. That is someone's child and friend. Why beat someone down after they get hit. They made a mistake and are paying dearly for it. I think that is enough. Geez.
