Wash rinse and repeat with this airport.

Hmm, somewhat ironic complaint considering the entire reason this is needed is because the county flipped the bill to build a new terminal for a specific airline that basically left down less than 2 decades later. If the airlines shouldn't pay for it, who should?

What’s wrong with the current setup?

This article is spot on.

Whats wrong? The airport is half empty. So you are stuck with paying for maintenance for a facility that is only like half used. This is about in the long run making it cheaper to run the airport. Hence the demolition of the landside terminal and the train. None of that is needed and I remember reading that eliminating the train alone saves 3 million a year. I am no expect on airports but if you are take their word for, the people proposing this say that despite the airport being oversized, the security part is too small. So you have the worse of both words, an airport that is half empty but still takes forever to get through security.

The article is way off base. The terminal 30 years ago was in hindsight a bad idea because it depended on 1 single airline increasing its traffic to pay for it. Not the case here. Ultimately this will make the airport far more competitive because it will be far cheaper to run. And of course, leasing the land the airport owns has been a goldmine. This is a slam dunk as far as I am concerned. Pittsburgh is not nearly large enough to warrant an airport that can handle 25 million passengers. But it is large enough to warrant a more efficient airport with say 15 million passengers. Kansas City is basically doing the same thing as so many mid sized metros have been gutted by airline consolidation. Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Stl, Cincy, KC all have lost hub status and its not coming back.

Is $3 million per year a significant figure when it comes to running an airport? Will customers bear increased costs as a result of this savings?

$3million a year is also initial savings…eventually the technology to maintain it would have to be upgraded or the airport would be stockpiling spare parts, which could escalate the cost. Since it’s not needed and acts a bottleneck, why not just eliminate it. Landside terminals are a thing of the past and expensive to operate. Condensing down just makes sense.

It sounds like an excellent idea, and I look forward to the results, but also sounds like a huge amount of money to make it happen.
