in that the people are alot less "blue-blood mentality", and more "blue-collar".... it's not a slight, but there is a discernable difference
Okay, this makes sense. I wasn't asking so much about river culture itself, more that the description of it as initially "repulsive" made me curious.

I did not mean it as a slight in anyway. You grow up on the E coast, water=ocean. You move to Pgh and water=river.
As far as blue collar etc., I did not mean that at all. I met lots of blue and white collar on the river.

Have you ever been to the Jersey shore- blue collar city.

Huh? That was a long time ago. I am at least as old as your parents. I remember people vacationing at "the shore" when I was a kid.

Yes, but it takes all day to get there.

I grew up in Northern NJ in Bergen County (Woodcliff Lake) or as the old joke goes, Jerzey? What exit? The very last one North before the Ny State Throughway.

We moved here about a year ago, and we are very happy. I took about a 20% pay cut, but we now have over 3 x's the house that we had in NJ.

I love that the actual city of Pittsburgh is so small that it's practically impossible to get lost in. I hate New York City and would find every excuse to not go there.

However, not thrilled about the fact that they are cluless here about how to sell beer apperently there is little regard for safety, I.E. the lack of a helmet law for motorcycles, lack of a hands free law for cell phones and Heaven forbid any of us would actually want to have clean air in a restaraunt, when we have all these people willing to give us their second hand smoke as if it were some kind of gift.

Overall, for someone who grew up in Northern NJ moving here was a really good thing for us.

Default Welcome to Pittsburgh!

Pittsburgh is a really great town. I think you will really enjoy it here. As a Pittsburgher for the past ten years I can honestly say that the people are down to earth and nice, its an affordable, and a great place to raise kids. The sports teams are great as they always win and downtown has a lot to offer.

Before you know it, you are gonna be a pittsburgher yourself! LOL

Dang, they are still smoking in restaurants in the Burgh? I was thinking of moving back near family, but honestly I think I will wait until they get up to speed and join the rest of the country (most) and ban public smoking.

You have no idea how hard it was for me to move from an area where there is no smoke in public places (NY, NJ) to a place like Florida which is quasi-smoke free, but places that don't serve food still have it. I was in NY, NJ for almost 4 years of smoke free and then when I went to Florida and went into a sports bar full of smoke I wanted to cry. I hate having to wash everything I have on as soon as I get home!
