As part of a new lease deal reached with McKnight Realty Partners earlier this year, the library will be adding more than 8,000 square feet of space at its current location in the Smithfield Building, with plans to offer more services to visitors.

But patrons might not like the plot line. The branch will close for about a year — starting in February — while the space undergoes extensive renovations.
...
During the closing, the library plans to offer a small temporary space at another location Downtown for patrons to drop off and pick up materials like books, documents and videos. The temporary site has yet to be determined, Ms. Thinnes said.

Glad they're still having a pick-up/drop-off location - it is convenient being able to request books from the library system and have them delivered for pick-up to the downtown branch so that I can walk over on my lunch break to pick them up.

Wanted to share this news in case any others on the forum utilize the downtown branch.

My partner and I often utilize this library to rent and/or pick up DVD's to watch (much cheaper than buying something "On Demand"!), so I appreciate this head's up! I don't pay for the Post-Gazette, so I don't often check their web site for updates. Thanks for sharing!

The cost of anything they charge to rent in on OnDemand is obscene IMO.

But anyway, a year is a point time to close the space, but the Downtown branch was definitely too small for the traffic it received, so this will be a much welcomed addition.

I mostly use the East Liberty library, but I go into the downtown branch on occasion. It is indeed small, and expansion would be very much appreciated.
