Apple... is talking to Walnut Capital about taking up to 90,000 square feet of space in the Pittsburgh Athletic Association building on Fifth Avenue in Oakland.
...
It is unclear whether Apple’s interest in the PAA represents an expansion of its presence in Pittsburgh or whether it would mean a move from its current headquarters in the 3 Crossings development in the Strip District.

Before moving to the Strip several years ago, Apple was located in the Robert Mehrabian Collaborative Innovation Center on the Carnegie Mellon University campus.

Apple’s Pittsburgh operations have been crucial to its Keynote and iWork suite of applications. The firm also has been working with Pittsburgh manufacturer Allegheny Technologies to buy specialty stainless steel for use in iMac and Mac Pro computers.

It is nice that they're also engaging with local manufacturers.

I'm hoping this is an expansion and not a relocation. That would be a big kick in the gut to the Strip District to lose Apple.

I read on the other board that the Strip is the location of the iWork team, and the new expansion will house the ML team (Machine Learning). I don't know what either of those are, but it's two different competencies. Pittsburgh is one of only a few cities outside of California to have an Apple corporate office like this. The others are Seattle, Austin, and one other I can't remember.

Machine Learning I would guess is AI, makes sense to me with CMU here.

Definitely good news for the city. I’m glad they are expanding here

Oakland continuing to densify, this plan looks decent and could be a pretty nice building.
