Back when I was in high school in the early '90s, we always felt incredibly cool when we drove into Oakland to hang out at the Beehive on Forbes Avenue. Indie movies, fancy coffee, communal board games - we were from Westmoreland County, so this stuff all seemed very hip and cosmopolitan. I haven't lived in the area for years and just found out that the Oakland Beehive closed in 2001 because of a landlord/tenant dispute. There's a newer Beehive on Carson Street, but it doesn't seem to have a theater space (based on the website, although I could be wrong). Does anybody know where a person would go for the "classic" Beehive experience these days - a movie with a comfortable, friendly, slightly freaky hangout before or afterward?

Thanks!

ZeldaS.

I am old enough to remember the Beehive- and sad to say I don't think there is anything around like that anymore.

I went to see the movie "Trainspotting" at the Beehive in '96. I thought it was cool too, and I was in my early 30s at the time

Yep, I came to Pitt for grad school in '93, and the Beehive was a major hangout.

Thanks for all the replies! Sad how time marches on.

I know there are a few arthouse/indie theaters in Squirrel Hill (at least I think it was Squirrel Hill) - do any of them have coffee bars? Anybody have any good/bad experiences to report?

Thanks!

ZeldaS.

I belong to an indie film group, so I'm in the local indie theaters all the time. None of them (Squirrel Hill, Regent Square, the Harris downtown, the Oaks in Oakmont) have their own in-house cafes, but most are in neighborhoods where decent bars, restaurants, and cafes are close by. Nothing like the Beehive in its heydey, though. I think the newish coffee shop Your Inner Vagabond in Lawrenceville has a movie night now.

Edit--It does--tonight is Waking Ned Devine, next week is Sicko: Your Inner Vagabond - Coffehouse and World Lounge

Now, iirc, the southside beehive is the original and the oakland one was the more recent addition (where i spent many afternoons in college!). it almost made me vomit when i saw a t-mobile store there.

Me too!

I was only 19 and my date though I was the isht!

The reason it closed was that it was so successful the landlord raised the rent too high.

'Fraid that place was one of a kind.

Tho the S Side Beehive looks like it hasn't been cleaned since I started going there in high school.

Ah, my mistake. Thanks for setting me straight!
