I thought it was just me getting paranoid in my old age, but traffic fatalities are higher than before covid. I won't live long enough to die from my covid vaccinations if this keeps up.

Part of it is the vehicles, not the driving. A while ago, I saw a kid get hit while crossing the street and the giant, flat front on the Range Rover meant he got hit in the head instead of lower down. (That also turned me against the Pittsburgh Left because the kid had the light. I was facing the Range Rover and not moving when the green hit because I was waiting for pedestrians. The Range Rover accelerated into a left to beat me and didn't look.)

Nah, Pittsburgh streets are so safe. Everyone is so nice. We have a perfect government. We all love each other and everything is happy and positive 24/7/365. No complaints here! (zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz)

Bottom line is that it was the driver and not the vehicle. A lower one would have sent the kid up over the roof and off the trunk.

The shape of the vehicle does matter quite a bit.

I had a dead battery in a Giant Eagle parking lot in Bethel Park last week. As soon as I raised my hood, I had people approach me to help. I doubt this happens in many other cities. Charged it up and headed to Pep Boys. I was on my way home 45 minutes after it failed to start.

I stopped to help a driver with a dead battery a few months. I carry a portable jump battery in my trunk. Two other people stopped to help as well.

I don't carry jumper cables anyone because those portable battery things are so much smaller and easier. Just getting the two cars aligned right for the cables was half the problem.

Breaking legs or pelvis, but not doing traumatic damage to the head. Lower vehicles with sloped hoods are better for pedestrian survival.
