Today maybe, but say 1980 here were the leaders Top 5 in GAA. Only one goalie under 3.00. How old are you??

Grant Fuhr played in the 80s and 90s. He’s in the hall of fame with a 3.38 GAA and .887 career save percentage. However he never had a defense in front of him and was always told to just try and keep the score one goal less. Had he had a defense his save percentage would likely be above .91 and GAA around 2. Wayne Gretzky said he was the best goalie of that era. That’s a lot coming from Wayne, who is probably the best to play and openly admitted Lemieux was a better goal scorer with a better shot than himself.

Tom Barrasso is another one. His stats were spectacular when a defense was in front of him. His goals against when playing for Buffalo was sub 3 his first two years in the league. The sabers were not a great team either. When he was traded to the pens Craig Patrick told him you will never have a great defense here but we know we can win with you. He set aside a lot of personal stat padding to play with the penguins. His GAA was always above 3 in the Lemieux era. It wasn’t until the year after Lemieux retired that Kevin Constantine was HC and implemented a much more defensive strategy. Barrasso came back that year after major shoulder surgery at age 33. In 63 games his GAA was 2.07 and his save percentage was .922 with 7 shutouts. The first time in his career he had a legit defensive team in front of him. Big difference.

Those years anything under 3.50 GAA was really good and you may be an all star. In the early 2000s that wide open hockey from the 80s and 90s changed. Those goalies mentioned along with others played in a different era of wide open hockey. There were many great goal scorers then. A little different than today.

For the record, Ken Dryden is probably the best NHL goalie ever. He won the Stanley cup first and then rookie of the year. He never lost more than 9 games a season. His career GAA was 2.24 and .922 sv percentage from 1971-79. I’d say he’d be the best in past and present NHL.

Unfortunately that’s a thing of the past and Jarry stinks.

Very nice summation. Thanks!

Yes Ken Dryden! Man, what a goalie. Those Montreal teams of the mid 1970s were so intimidating. I recall saving every penny I had to see them play the Pens in 1978. I wanted first row seats. Took me months to save up for a ticket. Lafleur, Dryden, Larry Robinson, Savard, Lemaire .. seems like yesterday..

Since the Pens don’t have a chance of winning a championship, when does the rebuild begin?

Lol I’m not disagreeing with you. I’m merely stating that one mans GAA above 3 without a defense is around 2 with a defense. You said those guys stink. Different eras. Put barrasso in the pens net today with goal scorers in today’s league and the pens playing defense unlike the early/mid 90s and he is probably one of the top 3 goalies in the league. Maybe the best.

Jarry playing without a defense probably has a GAA around 5.50 or 6. I’d make a switch at goalie coach and if things don’t improve it’s time to look elsewhere

It’s not like the Pens have a shot at a championship with or without him. Time to rebuild.
