I think almost all the people advertising rentals online end up in at least one of those places. But some landlords just put out signs, and the big management companies and complexes also don't always place advertisements. For the former there is really no substitute for driving around, but for the latter you can try to look them up online, or just call and ask about availability.

Move.com, Rent.com, ApartmentSearch.com, RentalHouses.com (if you're thinking about renting a house) and Prudent Real Estate (link: Pittsburgh Real Estate and Homes - Homes and Real Estate in Pittsburgh PA - Prudential Preferred Realty)

Just to note the best rentals in the city don't have to advertise much because they don't need to. When an apartment becomes free its simply based onto a friend etc.

You might want to "drive" the neighborhood you are interested in living. Stop at the local laundromats where there is a community bulletin board, some owners only post vacancies there. You might also want to check local hospital bulletin boards. I have a unit near AGH that when a vacancy comes up I post an ad there. Always looking for an intern to get a 3 year lease.

If you are associated with a university, they often have lists of student-friendly rentals on their websites.

How far is your rental place from University of Pittsburgh? My husband starts grad school in there in August. Were looking for a place but hoping to stay close to UP.
