Yes. CMU pays lots of salaries and businesses that are here because of CMU pay even more in salaries. That puts the money into the local economy and local tax base better than a robber baron. The wealthy can cruise the world looking for places to invest. That money goes all over. People working, even most of those with tech-company salaries, got to live and most of what you need for that is purchased local.

CMU is also a major exporter in the region because an international student paying tuition (usually full tuition, I think), rent, expenses in America is, for the trade balance, an export.

maybe i'm wrong - now let's see these $4+ million dollar houses sell

These are the region's most-recent million-dollar home sales

https://www.bizjournals.com/pittsbur...ome-sales.html

"The most expensive sale recorded thus far this year was the $2.22 million sale recorded on Feb. 9 of 1100 Shady Ave."

it went off-market because it sold

There have been 37 sales of homes above 1M so far this year via the west Penn MLS. There probably are a few that sold privately as well.

Then there's this unique conversion: https://www.pittsburghmagazine.com/t...-will-it-sell/

If it had a pool, I'd make an offer.

It's behind a pay wall...but the intro...

”Last year, more million-dollar homes were recorded sold than ever before in the Pittsburgh region, and early reports from 2021 could mean a repeat in 2021.”

Now I am sure someone is going to say, it says region not Pittsburgh but this really should put this whole conversation to bed...
