I saw a couple of new apartment buildings (e.g. https://kaufmannsgrand.com/) that show floorplans which have bedrooms with no outside windows. Some have bedroom windows to the hallway and bathroom which seems silly. These look like firetraps. What's going on?

Not sure about Pittsburgh but some areas exempt a bedroom from needing a second form of egress if it has a sprinkler system.

The developers had to partition the old Kaufman's Department store into apartments. It was not designed to be an apartment building. Did the store have an interior courtyard? There is no reason why a multistory department store should have an interior courtyard unlike a large apartment house.

Those interior bedrooms must have ventilation outlets which provide X number of air exchanges per hour.

They actually added two interior courtyards to the buildings, however the living rooms on the interior apts face them. This is not a strange practice for rehabs. Hienz Lofts is the same set up for most of its units.

How depressing. Even more depressing is to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for a windowless dwelling.

I don't understand your comment. If the old Kaufman's Department Store did not have an interior courtyard, just how did the redeveloper add one? They would have had to tear out the interior of the building in order to make a courtyard. Or are you talking about the new buildings?

They can cut the building and add a courtyard. I cut a 8' x 8' hole 27 stories tall at dequesne towers for an air shaft. It is the same principle only a larger scale.

I had no idea they could do that. I guess I'd prefer a window in both the bedroom and living room, but if I had to pick, I'd take the living room.
