Hopewell is a medium-sized (17 sq. mil) mostly suburban/exurban township located in southern Beaver County, near the industrial city of Aliquippa and just across the county line from the Moon area.

Hopewell appears to be one of Beaver County's oldest townships as it was formed in 1812, when the county's original townships of First/Second Moon and Hanover were divided further. Its original formation was much larger as it included present-day Aliquippa, Independence Township (to its west), and 16 miles of river frontage along the Ohio. Throughout the 19th Century, many other municipalities were carved out of Hopewell's borders. Much of the township's early history and economy was based on the farming and oil and gas industry, particularly in early villages such as New Sheffield (which still exists within the present-day township boundaries), where major natural gas wells were found on farms in the area. The city of Aliquippa was formed out of the township in the late 19th Century. Later on the in the 20th Century, with the post-WWII suburban sprawl, the township began to build many new neighborhoods and established itself as a local bedroom community. The latest historic event to have taken place within the township was the fatal USAir Flight 427 in 1994, which crashed near Aliquippa as it was preparing to land at Pittsburgh International Airport flying from Chicago. All 127 passengers and 5 crew members on board were tragically killed.

Today, Hopewell has about 12.5 thousand residents. Like much of the area, its population peaked in 1980 (at nearly 15,000). It has since fluctuated with a big drop in 1990, small recovery in 2000, a little bigger drop in 2010 and it seems like it may recover a little more population in 2020, due to some new developments being built in the 2010's. There is still some rural, undeveloped land within the township's borders. Hopewell is not a strictly residential township. There are pockets of business districts within the township that feature a few medium-sized shopping centers and commercial areas mostly along Broadhead and Green Garden roads. it has also been home to 97.5 acre RIDC Industrial Park since 1987. All in all, Hopewell seems to be doing fine despite problems in neighboring Aliquippa. Its location in between the rapidly expanding western suburbs of Allegheny County and central Beaver County, convenient highway access (376), and new developments on open land likely will keep the township afloat for years to come.
