I eat steak and shrimp often. I especially enjoy Boshamps seafood and Hyde Park steakhouse. I’ll actually be in Pittsburgh enjoying Hyde Park until November 1.

Bummer Erie - did you edit your post to remove your offer to GG to meet up -- I thought this might be the most consequential Pittsburgh-related meeting since Carnegie met Frick!

No bummer. I sent him an invite, and you can come too. He gets a drink, you get a drink. Just like you referenced Oprah. Everyone gets a drink. Thought it would be a nice gesture.

Just bumping this to make the point that the 2020 Census made a few things clear regarding population.

1. Pittsburgh gained adults, with the population growing by around 1%. In contrast, the population of children declined by 10.8% - or roughly 5,400.

2. While it seems the decline in white children and black children was roughly proportionate (very different from black vs. white adults) given the demographics of PPS (around 55% black, 33% white) it's very likely that the lost enrollment from PPS is coming much more heavily from a decline in black students.

As an example of this, earlier in the year, PPS unveiled their (now delayed) new consolidation plan. One of the schools they wish to close due to declining enrollment is Fulton K-5, which is a partial magnet (French focus) but also the neighborhood school for portions of Highland Park and East Liberty. And we know that Highland Park and East Liberty lost a combined 1,700 black residents over the last decade.

Indeed, when I look at the individual school enrollment data, for the most part declines are being driven by black flight from the school system, rather than white flight. The white population (at least as of 2020 counts) was actually rising in most of the East End schools and the magnets. It's really only in areas like South Pittsburgh you continue to see a decline in white enrollment - and those are areas the white population is declining more generally.

I can't imagine that many anti-maskers attend PPS - particularly since there already was a mask mandate in place.

Are you saying it has no affect on PPS enrollment?

There already was a mask mandate even last year during partial reopening, so I'd say anyone who gave a damn skedaddled before the start of this school year.

This new article says after the mandate so many must have changed their stance since then.

PA Cyber is a statewide charter with approximately 10,000 students. They're saying they had 172 requests for information across the entire state of Pennsylvania.
