Pittsburgh police would no longer be allowed to pull over drivers for secondary violations such as headlights or brake lights being burned out or license plates being improperly displayed, under legislation introduced Monday.

The measure is meant to make traffic stops more “equitable and fair,” according to the legislation sponsored by City Councilman Ricky Burgess.

IIRC, a very similar law went into effect in Philadelphia recently.

yup. It was noted that MOST of the vehicular drug and gun pinches were initiated by minor infractions.

The new mayor and the staff to support him has stated more than once that these pinches disproportionately affect persons of color, ergo....here we are. sometimes, its just a cigar.

I see many an automobile driving on busy roads and highways after dark without lights - either forgot to turn on or with several burnt out lights. A very dangerous situation.

This proposed law is idiotic and dangerous. And just a slap in the face to law enforcement simply for the sake of some sick symbolic pleasure.

Bingo

On the bright side it gives cops less to do. Keep slapping them in the face and they can sit it their cars, drive to the scene when it’s over, and write up the report of the aftermath.

If you live in Pittsburgh you would know Pittsburgh police already don't enforce traffic laws.

The stats provided in the article prove otherwise.

“Pittsburgh Police data show that officers conducted 4,650 traffic stops involving Black motorists in 2020, compared to 4,513 involving white motorists and 120 involving Hispanic or Latino motorists.“

If they weren’t, there wouldn’t be a law proposed to limit them.

meaning in 2020, pittsburgh police stopped 25 motorists a day. About what North huntingdon police does?

And *that* was too much.

but it is equally well known, that the bulk of the traffic initiated drug and gun pinches actually occur HERE, not there as Allegheny county has been loathe to enforce laws and warrants for decades to the point it becomes a wildly circulated joke.
