I'm also part German and was raised in Germany around the German culture. I have relatives who are all different religions. I know what it is like to live in closed minded areas and what it is like to live in open minded areas. For instance, I lived briefly in a small town in Missouri where I was constantly told I wasn't white enough (white enough for what-I'm not sure). It has been my experience that if an area is intolerant towards one group of people then they are typically intolerant to all minorities. Thank you again to those who have shared their experiences and opinions. They are all helpful. It is very difficult to decide whether to take a job transfer to a place you never been before.
There are a decent amount of German families in/around the city of Pittsburgh if that'd be something you may be interested in. Again, I don't think you'd be shunned for being a lesbian mom, it's just probably not as common around here if you're looking for other families under the same circumstances.

You will definitely encounter people here who are not used to the idea of lesbian parents, but that will happen anywhere except NY, SF and New England college towns.

People here are uncomfortable with racism generally. You would probably fit in fairly well in the Cranberry area which is mostly educated professionals.

Actually, most of the west is pretty open minded. There are exceptions, of course, but the general attitude is more "live and let live" than other places.

Lesbian parents? Is that even possible, biologically?

You'd probably be most comfortable living in the East End neighborhoods of the city, where there are more gay and lesbian parents and families. They are also some of the nicest neighborhoods in the entire metro area; well-established with shopping, walkable areas, parks, and tons of cultural attractions nearby. Your kids will see all sorts of people from all ethnicities and professions, and they will learn that diversity means more than just black and white skin. This area includes a variety of ethnic and racial groups because of the medical centers and universities in the area. It's probably the most gay-friendly part of the county. Neighborhoods to consider are Shadyside, Squirrel Hill, Regent Square, Highland Park, Point Breeze, and Friendship. They're all kind of clustered together.

The nicer neighborhoods in the East End do tend to be quite progressive and have a lot of gay couples. Some of them also feel relatively suburban, if that is more your style.

Agree with the east end neighborhoods being a better choice if you are looking for something "diverse" but still nice. I don't think the area as a whole (especially in the nicer middle to upper middle class areas) is a particularly closed minded one and I seriously doubt you'll have crosses burned on your lawn or anything, but you are without a doubt going to stick out anywhere else.
