What’s your definition of young, and how does the median age in Pittsburgh/Allegheny County compare to similar cities/counties across the country?

In migration is certainly anemic, but natural change has been negative for decades. Most cities don't have that issue (pandemic aside) and also at least have healthy foreign in migration to cover domestic losses.

In migration being anemic for cities that have a hard time keeping population, it’s certainly a problem, and with what we’ve seen over the last 2 years is states like PA are losing population due to shutting it down and the economic issues from it, which makes it even harder.

Pretty much, yeah.

We have so many articles about people fleeing the big cities, and maybe they are but per the census estimates, the places they would move to aren't growing any faster than they have the past 30+ years. For example, Lehigh, Northampton and Monroe counties all grew just by 1k each according to the "estimates". I don't think anyone who has been to those places thinks that is true.
They can be. It varies. If the estimates veer off, then the inaccuracies compound over time.

Yep, it is. What’s your definition of young, and what’s the comparison to other similar cities/counties across the country?

It would be in the top 30 youngest cities but it doesn’t go that far on the list. It tops out at 31.7 years in the 20 youngest cities. Pittsburgh is 33 years old median age and right up there with the youth of the future.

Florida is old fart central. The younger people, under 45 living in Florida that I know are very unhappy with the direction of the state and DeSantis. The old farts love his rhetoric and they line up in their scooters to vote for him.

Lol. Then find a list to prove it…and by your definition compared to other cities it’s really not that young.

No surprise there. There’s a few people that live in fear and think DeSantis is a big meanie, and housing has skyrocketed in the last 2 years which we love. On the bright side, those folks that can’t afford it can replace the areas that folks have left to come here, especially those that can’t compete for work with the meanie boomers.

Your claims of Florida being old holds no water as it’s younger than WV and only a year older than PA.

That does happen. They were off for some Pittsburgh area communities.

While there's a certain unpredictable nature to to the last two years, prior to it, there was a pattern. Many cities like Boston may have lost domestic migration, but had natural increases and strong international migration that off set it.

In some cases for parts if the Pittsburgh metro, there's even domestic increases, but natural decline is higher and overall popular still declines.

More of the country may experience that now, but a lot the region has dealt with this since the 90s.
