Did anyone see the 2021 estimates for the municipalities that were released today? Allegheny County did the worst it has done in years likely. The city of Pittsburgh actually had a lower percentage loss than most of the suburbs somehow, maybe due to higher international migration. Only about 8 municipalities coutywide grew or mainitained a steady population, some of which are traditional growing areas like Pine, Marshall, Findlay, South Fayette, Collier, Sewickley Hills, and Indiana, that likely built enough new homes on open land within a year. Castle Shannon was the other one, and was there tons of new apartments near the T-station in that area? Beaver did just as bad, not many if any municiplaities grew there. Butler and Washington still showed strong growth, primarily in the Mars/Seneca Valley and Canonsburg corridors. Westmoreland, did a little bit better than before, as Penn Township appears to be making a comeback and Hempfield a little bit too, maybe with the casino.

Keep in mind, we have all learned that census estimates are trash.

We have so many articles about people fleeing the big cities, and maybe they are but per the census estimates, the places they would move to aren't growing any faster than they have the past 30+ years. For example, Lehigh, Northampton and Monroe counties all grew just by 1k each according to the "estimates". I don't think anyone who has been to those places thinks that is true.

Yeah it is hard to say. While I see a few reasons why people are fleeing Allegheny County overall, I find it hard to believe that everywhere is actually losing that much population. Yeah those counties are certainly likely growing faster than that with exoduses from New York and Philadelphia.

There are many more deaths than births. The COVID death toll has been huge and has likely been undercounted by a lot. This part of the country specifically is old and aging. The white population is shrinking. I still thing we are on the cusp of a significant changing of the guard in this country. There hasn’t been a constitutional amendment for decades now. All branches of the federal government are the oldest it’s ever been. It’s stagnation at its finest. I think it’s gonna swing hard and end up reshaping the cultural identity of this country. However many on this board have it incorrect on the way it’s headed long term.

There is a huge silent chunk of the population tired of the crazies, tired of the lip service and tired of the amount of gun violence. Things are going to get remade and it’s gonna be a struggle for some of the regular loud posters on here to adjust.

Don’t forget so many that have left PA in the last 2 years.

Your state of WV is struggling so badly they’re trying to lure folks to move there with money. Perhaps PA will do the same.

Since everything else in the federal government has been corrupted from top to bottom, why would the Census Bureau be different? At this point, it would be safe to assume the numbers are politically motivated or are the result of outright bribes.

I don't get why people associate population change with exclusively migration (in or out) when for a lot of metros, it's natural change that is the most impactful.

Indeed. We aren’t a big in migration of retirees boosting population here. The youth is the future and Pittsburgh/ Allegheny county is young now.

When huge amounts of folks leave an area versus coming to an area, especially one that struggles to acquire/keep population, it’s a problem, unless one feels population isn’t a concern.
