Now it's used as a toilet for the hidden camp and it's disgusting. I have sympathy for the plight of the homeless, have even had friends who were homeless over the years. I don't think a lot of these younger people are in these camps by necessity. These people look more of the gutter punks, traveler type "homeless". I have known some of them too and these people do this as a lifestyle choice.
I agree, they choose this lifestyle for the most part. The one down by Bicycle Heaven is gross and smells bad. The camp I rode by is WAY larger now. Very nice tents with little walkways. Not dangerous, but if I was a woman or old person/easy target, I wouldn't go there. No way, no how. There will be crime. Always is.

My older brother had a friend from high school who decided he wanted to be a homeless gutter punk. He moved out to Berkley CA and squatted in an abandoned building with a bunch of other punks. That lasted until one of his "roommates" killed his girlfriend (apparently accidentally when drunk/high, not deliberately) and forced him to help him bury her body. He called up his father to get picked up that day. I think he sells used cars now.

Wonder what percentage of our homeless are "gutter punks". From what I have seen I would say at least 70% of them choose this life and have other avenues open to them. Some people like camping and man what a nice spot along the river.

Nah, you must’ve been sheltered from cartoons, especially since you’ve called yourself old many times. Wonder Twins appeared in 1977 and their appearance in cartoons went many years beyond that. Just needed to be able to afford a tv.

Pittsburgh City Council calls for removal of the riverfront campers/gutter punks (what a term).

https://www.cbsnews.com/pittsburgh/n...s-encampments/

I wish they would be removed. Camping shouldn't be legal there or if it is, then we all should be able to do it, but pay a fee to keep that area nicer.

Note that Bobby Smith and Deb Gross, who are on the "left" of the Council, are among those supporting immediate removal. This really is not a left/right issue.

I honestly think the reticence of the city to address this has more to do with $$$ than ideology.
