I love Bloomfield. It's one of those places that has a bunch of fresh out of college people who are just starting out. There's a lot of good places to eat and drink, and the area just feels alive. Granted, it is a bit grimy but that's what gives it character. In a way it's kind of the next step for those who just moved out of Oakland.

Bloomfield IS hip. Like Lawrenceville, it's a hipster enclave.

There's really nothing hip about Shadyside or Squirrel Hill -- they are too "old money." Bloomfield and Lawrenceville are where all the young people are.

I don't think you can say that about Shadyside, there are tons of young people living there. And it's not like it's some bedroom community for students who go to Oakland in the day, many of the businesses there definitely cater to a younger crowd. Though there is definitely a different vibe than Lawrenceville or Bloomfield. The difference can probably be described as hipsters vs. yuppies, but both of those terms are usually used in a disparaging manner.

I agree with you about Squirrel Hill, though. It's a nice neighborhood, but it is more suited for families than young people.

Squirrel Hill has a lot of grad/prof students, who fall somewhere in between.

You're right, Brian. It's yuppie vs. hipster. The hipsters don't really live in Shadyside. The yuppies do.

Seriously, what is a hipster in Pittsburgh? How can I meet one? If they are really hip, why are they being labeled as hip, shouldn't they go unrecognized? Do they have membership cards? Would not someone truly hip not want to be called that? How do you think the Buccos will do this year?

Head down to larryville on a friday night and stand at the corner of Penn and Main. That's where you'll find 'em.

The mere notion of Pittsburgh hipsters strikes me as amusing.

There is a lot of overlap between the current version of hipster aesthetics and Rust Belt Chic.
