I have the old gas/hot water radiators as well and for my big 4 bed, 2 bath 1920's brick colonial my gas heating bill is very reasonable. I also use the window unit AC and fans in the summer.

The other nice thing about the old brick homes is that the brick retains heat into the evenings, and retains cool into the mornings, which has the overall effect of smoothing out daily variations a bit and reducing your total annual energy needs. Sometimes the builders were also pretty clever about things like orientation, tree placement, overhangs, porches, and so forth (to the point of taking into account the difference in sun angles between summer and winter), which was necessary in an era where heating was kinda a PITA, and AC was non-existent.

I have to make a correction. When I said small rooms I was referring at the houses in the specified price range : up to 125k. I've been in old houses with large rooms ,pools or even tennis courts in Mt Lebanon.
As a matter of fact I advice to search for houses in Mt Lebanon on realtor.com and you will see the rooms sizes and amenities. Another alternative would be to go to open houses. This should give you an idea about the neighborhood.
In general people are very nice.
