This is kind of a dumb question, but are there any really good mini-golf places in the area? I know there are lots of regular Putt-Putt type places--I'm looking for the kitschy, tacky hit-the-ball-under-the-windmill (or the pagoda) types. Do such places exist anymore?

There's mini golf at Neville Island off I 79. I remember liking it and thinking it was pretty decent. There's one part where you have to hit the ball over a bridge of water and stuff. Check it out.

Default mini-golf

Wildwood Highlands (http://www.wildwoodpa.com/minigolfBIG.htm - broken link)near North Park has two courses that are quite fun. One has a castle theme, the other is tropical. For winter fun, there is a glow-in-the dark place at the Pittsburgh Mills Mall on 28. Happy golfing!

There's a place out in Coraopolis near the airport called Scallys. My grandparents used to take me there when I was a kid.

There is a real old time one just like you describe on Rt 19 in Cannonsburg, about a mile or so past Waterdam Plaza on the left (if heading south).

There's one behind the Dairy Queen on Rt 19 in Cranberry, one on 228 in Mars.... but I can't remember if they are a putt putt or a miniature golf...

Cool Springs in Bethel Park used to have a mini golf course. I haven't been that way in a while, so they may not have one anymore. It's on Baptist Rd.
