Hey everyone! I'm 25 and just moved to Oakland. I haven't lived here since i was about 2, so tons have really changed since I've lived here, now for a week and 2 days and still trying to find out some places that have activities (other then the library. i'm talking about places where I can either volunteer or just go to meet people, other then the friendly neighbors and familiar faces i've met so far. any help, thanks in advance!

What exactly happened to Oakland anyhow. I use to vist Oakland monthly in my younger days, but theSpouse grew up there and still has family in the area. During a recent visit, when he was trying to convince me that it would be just the place for us we drove all thru it.

Several times in fact. Boy has it changed.

Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History, either to visit or to volunteer! Call the Volunteer Office at (412) 622-3359, or if you have a specific interest in volunteering in the CMNH Division of Education, here's a page with more specific contacts:

Educational Programs at Carnegie Museum of Natural History (http://www.carnegiemnh.org/doe/volunteer.htm - broken link)

Right now CMA is hosting the Carnegie International, and I'd think its related special events would draw a younger hipper crowd.

See: Lectures and Events: Carnegie Museum of Art

Scroll down to events like the Life on Mars Book Club and From Pittsburgh to Mars: Artist Gallery Talk Series.

Not in Oakland, but not far, the Frick in Point Breeze will have volunteer opportunites, and they have free concerts and things: Welcome to the Frick (http://frickart.org/home/ - broken link)

South Oakland is pretty much off-campus housing for Pitt students, and "downtown" Oakland is mostly schools, offices, hospitals and lab space for Pitt and UPMC. But if you go "uptown" Oakland, between Bellefield Ave and Neville Street and north of Fifth Ave., it's a little more residential (apartments and condos), but very few signle-family houses, except for Schenley Farms, which are in the half-mil to million dollar range.
