What is the nearest oceanfront to Pittsburgh? What roads do you take? How far and long is the drive there?
Thanks!

The new jersey shore (atlantic city, neptune beach) can be reached in around 6 hours via the PA and NJ turnpike. Ocean City MD is a little farther at around 6.5-7 hours.

Cool. Thanks for answering my question, it's much appreciated! My mom will be moving to Pittsburgh with me next year and, having grown up on the coast of Washington state, she was curious to know just how far the nearest oceanfront was from there-- I'll be sure to tell her; sure she'll be thrilled.
Thanks again!

Just an aside, but the Great Lakes--not exactly an ocean, but with some similar characteristics--are even closer, and thus doable in a day trip. For example, Presque Isle State Park, near Erie, is about two hours away.

Pittsburgh seems a ways off but the drive to the Jersey Shore is very do-able. There is just something about the Jersey Shore that really draws me to it. We did it each summer and even more once I hit adult-hood. I just LOVE Atlantic City.

The East Coast is very different from what you are used to out in Washington. Way different. Lake Erie is a qicker destination and has almost everything you desire in the way of Waterfront. Pittsburgh has grown too where the rivers are concerned. One doesn't always have to drive all the way to the shore to enjoy the water.

Yeah, but Eriewater Taffy and Monwater Taffy don't have the same cachet as Salt Water Taffy....

True, but those of us in flyover country are used to not being close to the ocean. People from the coasts will ask about how we can stand it not being near the ocean, since they're used to spending almost every weekend at the beach. A full-on beach vacation might be something you do once or twice a year, but otherwise, you find a lake or creek or river within an hour or two and go there for your body-of-water fix.

People who have lived near the shore, beach, whatever you want to call it seem to miss it forever. The Pittsburgh waterways are excellent for boating, but you don't spread out your beach towel along the Mon and lay in the sun, or boogie-board in the water. I just got back from Virginia Beach. It was awesome!

I used to live 3 miles from the Pacific Ocean. I don't really miss it. Maybe I do a little, but I deal with it OK.

Presque Isle is amazing! Beaches, lighthouses, waves. Everything but the saltwater, but who cares about saltwater? I'm going there tomorrow.

There's even a nice resort island not too far away in Ohio's portion of Lake Erie. Best way to access it is to catch a ferry from Sandusky, OH. Which is what, a 4, 4 1/2 hour drive from the Pittsburgh region?
