I'd say over the past 10 years, crime has been coming down in the Hill District. Although still not a safe place today, it is nowhere near as dangerous as Homewood or Larimer now. 10 years ago they were all about the same. Now, not so much.

I belong to the YMCA on Centre Ave and most of the people I meet there live in the Hill district. They seem happy with where they live. While it's not the best neighborhood, I think you're making much too broad a statement.

I agree that the people I have met from the Hill seem pretty happy. I don't go there often because it isn't on route on my bike to anywhere, but get through there now and again. It isn't that bad really. I think Homewood is probably the top dog in general, but statistics per capita would have to be reviewed to really know.

Redevelopment of a problematic section of the Hill District might have led to a drop in homicides in the central police zone of Pittsburgh in 2013, a police official said.
There were four homicides — down from nine in 2012 — in Zone 2, which includes Lawrenceville, Uptown, the Hill District and Downtown, according to police statistics.
“Elmore Square was torn down,” Cmdr. Eric Holmes said. “These were some of our historically troubled areas.”...There were 46 homicides across Pittsburgh in 2013, up from 42 in 2012, according to the medical examiner. There were 91 countywide in 2013, down from 96 in 2012.
The East End neighborhoods that make up the Zone 5 police district led the city in the number of homicides for the second year. There were 17 in 2012 in the zone, which includes Homewood, East Liberty, Garfield and Larimer, and 24 in 2013.

Agreed.

The hill is a HUGE area. There are many sections and the majority of the violent crime is isolated to the older projects.

ive lived where i do for 8 months or so. every single day there is a siren blaring, heading towards the hill district from i guess the downtown side.

i dont care if its come a long way. its not a war zone (i think) but residents there who can 'upgrade' do - they get the hell out to a more mentally healthy place where bullets dont fly (as much).

im not being negative - this is just my perception without stats (people here take liberties to do that, so i will too). im happy for it there isnt as much violence as i remember hearing about back in the early 1990s. and...it just looks great (relatively). old structures rehabbed, and thanks to the good government, lots of new ones.m

i wouldnt call it a magnet exactly, though. i would definitely look into buying up there, though.

but for the general demeanor? and again, from my perspective...not nice. typical overcast pittsburgher grim-faced crabby stick-up-your-butt people.
