You need to visit the YMCA on Center. The day I joined I walked into the locker room and a woman said "Welcome to our Y!". People are very welcoming and friendly there. Just about everyone I've met lives in the neighborhood. I've belonged to Ys in other cities and they all have been friendly places.

^Yes friendly people are everywhere, at Homewood's YMCA yal would likely receive the same treatment. I'm not belittling the experience...just saying.

Regarding current status yes the redeveloped area of the Hill is much safer than Larimer and Homewood. However, a large core of the Hill District (most of Middle Hill, Terrace Village's Blackenridge Street, and Beford Dwelling's Bedford Avenue) is second in the Pittsburgh/Allegheny County danger chart only to Homewood- which had 41 homicides. Central Wilkinsburg comes next in line with 33. From 2008-2013 the Hill had 40 murders (most were in Middle Hill or the housing projects). Yet as the development spreads and the projects continue to raze I do believe the Hill will get safer.

This map was created for another thread, but the black highlighted area reflects the area I'm talking about. The red area (mostly Lower Hill and mixed-income housing in Middle Hill) is in the same category as "bad but not too bad" neighborhoods like Southern Knoxville, Southern Swissvale, Northern East Liberty-south of Hays, Hazelwood from East Elizabeth St to Mansion Street, and Upper Manchester. This Lower Hill/red highlighted area did improve significantly since 2008; only Western Wilkinsburg, Manchester, Central Northside, East Liberty, and East Deutschtown have quieted down more. The rest of the highlighted areas in the Hill District are either safe/stable or improving.
