I have also pointed people toward Franklin West in the past if they are looking for apartments in Shadyside. My wife rented from them before we lived together, and her experience was fine. Based on her experience and others I have talked to, they are a little pricey but their apartments tend to be in very good condition. The flipside of that is that they are pretty touchy when you move out and there is good chance you will get stuck with a cleaning fee taken out of your security deposit.

Pittsburgh has always had an incerdibly low apartment vacancy rate for some reason, especially in the city. I think it's under 5% or something. And now that the next round of grad students have moved in for the year, it may be tight. I know that Shadyside is also tight right now because of the medical complex expansion and people coming to town and wanting apartments.

Yes - your timing is not the best - most of the apartments in Sq. Hill and Shadyside are filled with the big influx of sudents, who come into town in August/September for the new semester. Some students will be leaving at the end of December, and very few ones come in then, so finding a place in Jan./Feb. is a lot easier than at this time of year.

We've rented from Rockwel Realty, who has places throughout the east end. Their offices are in Morningside. I can highly recommend them based on our own experience - they were great to deal with, and very quick to correct any problems - replaced an older fridge quickly when it died.
