Yeah, but even an indie station like WYEP has a limited playlist. A couple of years ago I was working in our offsite office, where they listened to YEP all day, and by the end of the month I was so sick of them playing the same Patti Griffin and Ryan Adams songs over and over and over. And they don't play nearly as much local music as you'd think they would.

I have the same complaint about mainstream rock stations as most everyone else: an extremely limited playlist. If you ask these stations why they limit their playlist (and I have, as I used to work in radio), they'll tell you that they have market research that indicates audiences are largely conservative and wish to hear their old favorites, ad nausium. Hence the small, non-diverse playlists.

This has always confounded me, because nearly every casual conversation I have with friends, family, coworkers, and even web forums like this one, indicates that audiences are sick of the same old stuff and long for more variety.

So, what I'd love to know is: where is their market research coming from?

I've found the same thing.Another example is go to see a classic rock cover band in a bar/club and nearly all of them play the same crap.Lynyrd Skynyrd, etc. But here in Tampa we have one local band that plays a very eclectic mix of classic rock including Bohemian Rhapsody and guess what? They're the highest paid, most popular local band around.Go figure.

I heard something the other morning on DVE that took me for surprise. The commentators were discussing the sports teams with the highest team merchandise sales. Ohio State was brought up as number 4 of 10 (or whatever) and the one commentator said something to the nature of "Ohio State? They don't have anything other than a hockey team". I wanted to call up and remind them about the football team. It wasn't the misinformed information that took me, it was more of how sure he was of his answer.

The last time I tuned into Pittsburgh terrestrial radio- I tried to save my ears and turn on 94.5.. What the HELL HAPPENED?!?!?!

They don't play oldies anymore? Just bad retro sounding hits from the 80s?

Yeah, I've experienced the same thing. My dad listen to The X, which I freaking hate with a passion, but he complains that it plays the same stuff over and over. Saturday mornings on the X conist of "Hurt" from Johnny Cash (which is a way worse version than the original), and an assortment of Metallica and Nirvana songs, all repeated throughout the day. Actually, "assortment" is way too generous of a term, since they play the same Metallica and Nirvana songs all the time. "Master of Puppets" and Kurt Cobain mumbling incoherently through yet another atrocious Nirvana song. Oh, and throw in some Sublime, since they were so like super rad awesome m i rite?!

99% of commercial stations across the country have very, very limited playlists.

They brand themselves around core artists and play a select highprofile few songs from these core people, with a sprinking of other artists.

CHR (Top 40) and other formats which focus on current chart hits smother you with a portion of the hits.

It's all very rigid and reluctanct to change despite losing advertising dollars to other media and losing listeners.

I was totally surprised when DVE played some new Rush last week-but that was only b/c Rush was playing the Consul Energy Center last Thurs
DVE has been playing rock since 1969-it will never change until it changes hands. And I think being owned by ClearCHannel is probably the biggest prohibitor of the station being able to advance itself along.
